Thank you for making a difference!

Quick Tips for a Sustainable Stay

B Like Breck and help us protect our mountain home.

  1. Compost with Ease: Request a green bin from the Front Desk. Housekeeping will take care of the rest!
  2. Skip “Compostable” Disposables: Our local facility cannot process “compostable” forks or cups. Please put these in the trash.
  3. Know Your Plastics: We only recycle Plastics #1, #2, and #5 in the form of bottles, jugs, and tubs.
  4. Avoid Contamination: Items like berry clamshells and coffee cups are considered contamination. If a batch is more than 10% contaminated, it all goes to the landfill.
  5. BYO Bottle & Bag: Plastic water bottles aren’t sold in town, and plastic grocery bags are unavailable (paper bags are 10¢).

Water Conservation

  • Bathroom Efficiency:
    • Take 5-minute showers, or less, instead of baths.
    • Turn off the tap while brushing teeth, washing hands, or shaving to save 4-6 liters per minute.
    • Use a cup for rinsing and avoid letting the water run while washing your face.
  • Towel and Linen Reuse:
    • Hang up towels to reuse them rather than leaving them on the floor, as frequent laundering consumes significant water.
    • Request that sheets are not changed daily.
  • Water Usage Awareness:
    • Do not use the toilet as a trash can (no flushing tissues, wipes, or other waste) to save water.
  • Report Leaks:
    • Immediately inform management if you notice a dripping faucet, a toilet that runs constantly, or any other leaks.
  • Kitchen & Common Areas:
    • If you have access to a kitchenette, wash fruits and vegetables in a bowl rather than under running water.
    • Only run dishwashers with full loads.

Myth Busting

Myth 1: “Recycling just gets thrown away.”

The Truth: Only if it’s contaminated. Because Summit County uses a manual hand-sorting process rather than high-tech lasers, we can only accept specific items. If a batch has more than 10% “wrong” items, the whole load must go to the landfill.

What we CAN take:

  • Plastics #1, #2, & #5: (Bottles, Jugs, and Tubs only)
  • Aluminum & Glass
  • Cardboard & Paper

What counts as “Contamination” (Trash it!):

NO plastic bags or berry clamshells.

NO coffee cups or milk cartons.

NO “compostable” plastics (our facility can’t process them).

Myth 2: “Recycling doesn’t make a difference.”

The Truth: Your efforts have already added 33 years to our landfill’s life!

In 2007, our local landfill was predicted to be full by 2045. Thanks to community recycling and composting, that date has been pushed back to 2078. Your choices directly protect our mountain home.

Pro-Tip for your Stay:

“When in doubt, find out—or throw it out.” > Keeping our recycling stream clean is the best way to ensure your efforts count.
